The Premise

One advantage of fantasy worlds is that they are populated with all kinds of denizens. From mermaids to orcs/goblins, there is no shortage of fantastical creatures that live out in the wild, some peaceful and others more vicious. There is one monster who inspires fear whenever someone is unfortunate enough to lay eyes upon it and it would be the fantasy basilisk.

The basilisk is a legendary creature and for good reason. It is considered to be the King of Serpents due to both its great size and the powers it wields. The snake itself gets around by slithering from one place to another though it can move quickly at times which only compounds the threat it poses to people.

Besides its gargantuan size, the fantasy basilisk is a powerful monster, equipped with several kinds of powers that it uses at will to eliminate its enemies and prey. It is especially fond of using its razor-sharp teeth to sink its fangs into its prey, creating holes too deep to heal properly, if they heal at all. Its toothy fangs are also laced with poison which helps drain the life out of its victims.

Due to the power this vicious snake wields, it is not a beast that people see all the time. Rather, it is rare, choosing instead to dwell in areas far removed from civilization, notably those full of other animals that it could consume. Furthermore, it also likes those awash in darkness since it abhors the light which makes traveling through these places far more dangerous since it gives little to no warning before it strikes.

This is the eighteenth article in the series delving into all kinds of fantasy creatures. If you like this article and want to se what else we have, check out our blog page where there are many more, covering various topics about fantasy!

The Elongated Appearance of the Fantasy Basilisk

The basilisk is one of the largest snakes in the genre and in some worlds, it stands at the top of the serpent hierarchy with no competition. The main reason for this is due to its ginormous size, which strikes fear in even the bravest man’s heart. Despite its colossal size, it is quite agile, capable of slithering at a dizzyingly-fast speed.

True to its species, the fantasy basilisk resembles a snake in terms of appearance. It has an elongated body that stretches more than twelve feet or more, depending on the world it appears in, ending in a tail that can knock someone off his feet in just a number of seconds. Its color can vary by world, with it being gray in one and purple in another, though it generally uses those on the darker side of the scale.

The face of the serpent intimidates those who are strong enough to look at it. Its reptilian eyes, slit nose, and mouth makes people step back and gulp apprehensively, especially if they see its eyes which can be either orange, red, or black. The mouth conceals one of its greatest weapons, its forked tongue.

Within its maw, besides its tongue, lies the toothy fangs of the fantasy basilisk. Its pointy teeth are so sharp that it can cleave someone’s skin in one or two seconds. Unfortunately for its would-be victims, the fangs are dripping with a high concentration of lethal poison that brings death quickly if it is not treated in time.

Due to its size, the snake leaves behind a trail of goo that dissipates after a short while. The goo is a byproduct of the poison coursing through its veins and those who are lucky enough to see it will recognize that a fearsome monster is lurking nearby and endeavor to get away before it is too late.

The Fantasy Basilisk and Its Frightening Powers

This massive snake doesn’t just rely on its size to go after prey and threats, it makes excellent use of its powers and abilities to quickly take care of them. Its terrifying powers are one reason why it is one of the most feared creatures in the genre and for good reason. For those who wish to fight one, knowing what they are just might spell the difference between victory and defeat.

The power that is commonly associated with the fantasy basilisk is its ability to immobilize someone in place, thereby killing him. It glares at its target with its intimidating eyes, freezing it where it is as it perishes from its gaze. Death can be instant should someone unfortunate enough to look at its eyes.

Another ability the serpent has is in its fangs. They are laced with poison of the lethal variety and it uses them to drain the life out of its hapless victim who will succumb to it if it is not treated in time. This monster resorts to poisoning its victim if it is unable to kill someone by glaring at him.

There are several things the fantasy basilisk can do with its body against its enemies. For instance, it can tightly wrap itself around someone and strangle the life out of the trapped person. It can also use its mighty tail to send someone flying and move to kill him before he gets back on his feet.

The snake makes great use of its forked tongue. It can lasso its target from a relatively short distance and keep him in place as he prepares to bite him. Additionally it can also pull it in and try to consume him or it can simply fling him across a distance and hope that the impact either causes severe damage or kill him outright.

Where One Might Come Across the Fantasy Basilisk

The fantasy basilisk is one of the most vicious monsters of the genre which begets the question: where does such a nasty beast live? Keep in mind, it is one of the rarest creatures, meaning finding one won’t be easy and will be time-consuming. However, for those who desire to find it, there are several places he ought to look in.

Due to its intense dislike of the light, the serpent favors dark locales. Places like caves or mines are natural hiding places since they are shrouded in darkness and rarely receive many human visitors. It burrows itself deep into these areas which means courage is required to step foot in them, knowing perfectly well that a massive behemoth could be lurking just about anywhere.

Another good place to search for such a fearsome monster is the wasteland. It is a forbidding and gloomy place where despair reigns supreme which makes it one of the best areas in the world to look for one. Its constant cloud cover blocks out the sunlight, enabling it to move around freely.

The third area the fantasy basilisk calls home is within the mountains. It could be under a rock formation somewhere on the mountains or one of the caves found there. It has ample access to other animals which it devours with glee. Sometimes it doesn’t stay in one place on the mountains, it’ll move elsewhere if it believes there is nothing more it can do where it is already.

While you don’t typically see it in the desert due to its deep aversion to the light, there is one place where you can find it there and that would be the pyramid. The large structure offers it excellent protection from both the light and heat of the desert as well as being chock-full of many hiding places. It can venture outside of the pyramid in the evening to hunt for prey and hurries to return home before dawn.

The fantasy basilisk is a stellar addition to an imaginary world due to both its impressive size and assortment of powers. It is notoriously difficult to slay which makes fighting one generate plenty of interest since the audience is unsure of whether the person it is fighting can actually take it down. You can’t go wrong with bringing such a powerful creature in both your story and world!
