Introduction

One great thing about the fantasy genre is that there is no shortage of amazing creatures and human-like races you get to see. You see what they look like, how they act, where they live, and so on and you cannot help but be mesmerized at them. Out of all of them, the fantasy mermaids are one of the most popular, mainly because they are beautiful creatures and they live underwater.

Mermaids don’t just dwell under the waves, they live in cities that land-bound humans have no chance of reaching unless they discover a way to get there. These majestic beings depend on the seas for everything they need, from sustenance to building materials for their huts and homes.

There is an elegance to fantasy mermaids. They move ever so majestically with their tails effortlessly propelling them forward. Many of the treasures of the sea such as pearls are used for decoration, whether it be as necklaces, earrings, or household items. Mermaids speak in dulcet tones that attract all nearby creatures, whether it be humans on the land or the aquatic beasts of the briny deep.

In the grand scheme of things, mermaids shape the world by acting as stewards of the oceans and seas. Big believers in nature, they work constantly to protect the seas from damage such as litter and they also drive out troublemakers or those who intend to do them harm. They only reveal themselves to the humans on the surface when their need is great and they cannot fix the problem by themselves.

This is the fifth article in the fantasy creatures series. If you want more, take a gander at our blog page where new articles are added every week!

Fantasy Mermaids and the Sea

The best thing about having mermaids is that they give viewers a glimpse into a world unlike any they’ve seen before. A world far removed from that of the surface. People see a world awash in all kinds of fish and other aquatic lifeforms and how mermaids live in the depths of the oceans.

The vast majority of fantasy mermaids live together in communities, forming essentially underwater civilizations. Many of them live in huts of varying sizes from small to large. They even have their own forms of governments such as democracies, monarchies, and even tribal. The leaders of these societies reside in gargantuan structures such as castles that tower over the towns and cities of the realm.

Mermaids depend on the sea for everything, from necessities such as food to luxury items such as jewelry. They cultivate crops — and they never have to worry about watering them at all — like seaweed and take care of creatures like clams and oysters that they use for sustenance. A good number of mermaids are excellent scavengers, going to shipwrecks to retrieve useful materials like wood or iron.

The homes of fantasy mermaids ooze in comfort. They have shell-like beds that make it easy for them to fall asleep on and their shell furniture beckons people to come and use them. Their walls are lined with shells and other decorations found in the seas. Some of them even incorporate objects obtained from shipwrecks like paintings and pictures in their household decor.

Living at the bottom of the ocean, mermaids wear clothes with materials that make it easy for them to get around. The women wear bras or those similar of a bikini top where their skin can breathe easily and doesn’t slow them down as they move around underwater. Some male mermaids wear shirts and some don’t. It’s easy for them to get muscles due to all of the strenuous activities they do underwater, from hauling things from shipwrecks and the local mines to building places for their fellow mermaids to live in and run their own businesses.

The Grace of Fantasy Mermaids

Since they spend the entirety of their lives under the waves, mermaids have developed a graceful way of moving around which is one reason why they’re so mesmerizing. There is an understated elegance to their movements as they so effortlessly swim from one place to another, their tails gently flapping in the water.

Besides their hypnotic movements, fantasy mermaids also have beautiful voices. Each syllable they utter is magnetic and can easily make anyone forget what they were thinking. This is the reason why in some stories, they are depicted as sirens of the sea, using their lullaby-like voice to deliberately lead sailors astray.

In all of the tales they appear in, mermaids are attractive. The women have beautiful faces and long, flowing hair that runs well past their shoulders while also wearing clothes that cover their breasts while revealing their stomachs. The men too have long hair and broad shoulders and either wear no tops or some clothes, notably those that highlight their muscles. Much like their land-confined brethren, both sexes use their good looks to get what they want.

When interacting with the humans on the surface — which doesn’t occur all too often, by the way — fantasy mermaids have quite a bit of options to choose from. Some are simply polite, willing to listen to what they have to say, whereas others adopt a more confrontational approach. They are more hostile and hold them responsible for the condition of the oceans.

As creatures of the sea, mermaids wear accessories that showcase their mastery of the water and emphasize their physical attractiveness. Women wear varying types of necklaces that accentuate their bosoms and men have on rings that represent the power they wield in the water.

How Fantasy Mermaids Shape the World

The majority of mermaids consider themselves the guardians of all things ocean. It isn’t just their home, it’s where everything they depend on is and they will zealously protect it, even going so far as to sacrifice themselves. This is their guiding principle, the one thing they base every single action they take throughout their lives on.

Fantasy mermaids work constantly to cleanse the oceans. They do so by removing litter and finding other uses for them and/or cleaning up polluted areas to give those affected a second chance at life. It is for those reasons that many mermaids view the humans on the surface with suspicion and even contempt for their wanton carelessness at the damage they’re causing the seas.

Mermaids love to interact with the other sea creatures. Many fish like to swim alongside them and some are even kept as pets. By interacting with them, mermaids are able to learn more about what’s going on in the parts of the ocean far beyond their sphere of control. This way, they keep tabs of the state of the world, at least underwater.

This great fish-like structure is a water dungeon. The blue fish's open mouth serves as the entrance. Above it are two purple eyes. There's different kinds of decorations on the fish like tears. In front of the great fish are 4 smaller fish statues, made by fantasy sculpturers. The sea floor is blue and the mountains in the background are a darker shade of blue.

As beings who reside in the depths of the water, fantasy mermaids have their own places of worship which they venerate above all else. They go there whenever they need counsel and to keep them pristine. Whenever one is defiled or violated, they take it as a harbinger that bad times are coming and move to hunker down until they’ve passed.

They dislike outsiders, preferring instead to solve their own problems by themselves. Only when said problem is too great for them to deal with themselves will they endeavor to ask for outside assistance. Most of the time, they blame them for the problem although some outsiders have won their trust but only after having proved themselves worthy of deserving that trust.

Fantasy mermaids are one of the most fascinating parts of the fantasy genre. Viewers are treated to life under the waves and their beautiful civilizations and refined way of speaking. Should you include them in your story and world, they’ll be amazing and you can use them to create fantastic stories that take place underwater!
