Introduction

Navi from Ocarina of Time. The sims with wings from The Sims series. They are all different variations of what is one of the genre’s cornerstones: the fantasy fairy. The fairy is a force to be reckoned with and is one of the most beautiful sights to behold. Any mortal fortunate enough to lay eyes upon such a beautiful creature will carry that memory for the rest of his life.

The fairy appears in many worlds and stories which makes it one of the genre’s most iconic figures, up there with the dragon and unicorn. One reason why the fairy is iconic is because it is depicted as a beautiful woman attired clothes that emphasize who she is at heart. Yes, there are male fairies but when you think of a fairy, a woman almost always comes to mind.

Besides the fantasy fairy’s resplendent beauty, she holds a lot of power. Indeed, she can wield just about any power, from light to fire, which makes her terrifying to face in battle, especially if you only have a sword. She also has other powers in her arsenal, namely healing, that can turn the tide of battle in one direction or another.

Since the fairy is one of the most powerful figures in the world, she chooses to hide in remote places far removed from civilization. This serves a twofold purpose: one to ensure that her powers aren’t abused and secondly, to make it that only a select few, like the protagonist, can find her and ask to learn a power from her. The Great Fairies that appear throughout The Legend of Zelda series are the perfect example of this.

This is article number seventeen in the fantasy creatures series. If you want to read our other articles, you can find them on our blog page!

The Fantasy Fairy: A Cornerstone of the Genre

The fairy flutters her wings as she effortlessly glides around, keeping her eyes peeled for signs of intruders. She knows that many people have tried throughout eons to catch a view of her magnificent beauty. She goes to great lengths to conceal herself, desiring only to reveal herself to those she deem worthy.

The fantasy fairy is breathtaking in appearance, having long flowing hair, usually golden but any other color works well here, that runs well past her shoulders, ending at or just above her hips. She has kind eyes though if provoked, they turn angry, illustrating the rage simmering just underneath the surface. Her long, pointy ears signify her connection with a world no mortal could ever comprehend.

Wizard huts are found in many places in fantasy. This brown-colored one sits in the middle of a forest with green woodland spirits floating around. A dark pond sits on the lower left and a golden path runs from the hut's door to the bottom. Smoke is billowing forth from the chimney.

Her fair face draws attention away from her slender body which is clothed in extravagant garments. They are regal-like but have a touch of nature. The color clothes she wears is dictated by the type of power she wields. For example, if she is a water fairy, they are likely to be blue whereas a fire fairy will have red clothes.

Though an overwhelming majority of fairies have white wings, they come in other colors as well. There are some violet, black, gold, and even rainbow wings. How they are able to have different colored wings is a secret only they know and they will only divulge it to those who are about to receive them for the first time.

The average fantasy fairy lives in solitude. Living by herself enables her to commune with nature and to observe events from afar without any interruptions. In some worlds, fairies live together, forming communities though they always make it so that they cannot be discovered by mortal eyes. Should one wish to enter such a place, he must receive a blessing from a local fairy with the understanding that he cannot reveal the location to anyone and to adhere to its rules and laws.

The Great Powers the Fantasy Fairy Wields

Many fictional worlds teem with magic and only a few powerful beings can tap into it to create great spells that can either create or destroy. The fairy is one such and she can use pretty much any kind of power which makes her one of the deadliest to face in battle. She won’t hesitate to use the full might of her powers if she feels like her life is threatened, meaning she will neutralize any threat with relative ease.

Across the worlds of the genre, the powers and abilities the fantasy fairy has are elemental at heart. They can be forest, fire, lightning, and even time-based. This is due to her affinity with the natural world where she draws from it to use spells that match her element. The color clothes she wears is representative of her elemental powers. For instance, green clothes denote forest, yellow clothes for either sand or lightning, and so on.

A spell of light magic, the light shaft delivers a powerful blow to a foe. This image shows a large dark yellow orb floating above a green. The orb is surrounded by smaller floating orbs. All the orbs have a darker yellow shade on the outer side with the interior having many dark spots. The green wand is in the lower right and is pointing towards the upper right with the orb to its upper right. It's shooting out a large shaft of light with alternating shades of light and dark yellow from the outermost to the innermost layer. The shaft is going right, all the way to the side. The background features a light-dark blue radial gradient. Layered in alternating rows from the outermost to innermost, the center row is a bright blue behind the orbs and shaft.

While the vast majority of fairies sport elemental powers, they also have those that are emotion-based. For instance, a happy fairy is likely to use spells that rejuvenate all those around her whereas a sad one will spread gloom and despair whenever she goes. If you see an angry fairy, steer away from her at all costs, lest you get pulled into whatever calamities she generates while in that state.

The fantasy fairy is one of the best practitioners of magic when it comes to that of healing and love. The average fairy knows the basics of healing such as soothing sores and wounds and she can even cure some diseases. Furthermore, she has powers of regeneration, giving people back the limbs they’ve lost over the years. However, she won’t use these powers for everyone, only those she deems worthy and those who she perceives have the power to change the world.

Levitation and teleportation are among the other powers the fairy has. Though she may have wings, she is fond of floating in midair. Her levitation abilities enable her to remain afloat for an extended amount of time without relying on her wings. She can disappear and appear at will, an ability that is useful when she wishes to conceal herself from view or to get to another place right away.

Where the Fantasy Fairy Lives

With all the powers she has, it’s no surprise that people try to reach the fairy, leading her to hide out in areas where she knows they are unlikely to go. The reason for this is twofold: to minimize contact with mortals, many of which have ulterior motives in seeking her, and to be available for the ones who are fated to change the world.

Since the forest has the strongest relationship with nature, it is no surprise that the fantasy fairy would elicit to live in such a wooded area. She is likely to dwell deep within, in a part she knows people seldom venture to. She is able to commune with other forest spirits to learn what is going on around her and beyond.

Besides the forest, the fairy is fond of heated places like the volcano. Fire is considered one of the most powerful elements due to its destructive nature. As a bonus, only those with a stout heart and determination can conquer the heat to meet the fairy where she will bestow them with a power that will serve them well in their journey.

On the opposite side of the spectrum lies the water, one of the fairy’s most popular places to live. Its coolness enables her to twist it in any way she sees fit, from casting great waves to shooting out a jet of water to daze her foes. She can also dive deep into its depths, making it impossible for any mortal to reach her.

Due to the constant heat and sandstorms, the desert is also another excellent site for the fairy to dwell in. She knows the desert doesn’t get much traffic, making it likely that she’ll cross paths with a few humans. She considers it a trial and those who are fortunate enough to reach her after wandering the desert will receive a power that will prove instrumental in their journey.

The fantasy fairy is an integral part of building a stellar imaginary world that captivates people. She is one of the most beautiful beings to walk the world and those who are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her will carry that memory for as long as they live. Besides her great beauty, she wields an impressive array of powers that can instantly turn the tide of battle. You can’t go wrong with bringing the fairy into your world and story!
