The fantasy genre is populated with all sorts of wondrous creatures, each one more interesting than the last. One of them, the fantasy pegasus, is perhaps one of the most fascinating due to a number of reasons. This beast brings nothing but awe from onlookers whenever it decides to grace people with its presence.
The pegasus, one of the oldest animals of the genre, resembles a horse in terms of physical appearance. The only difference between the two is that it has wings and that is what makes people awed since it means it can do things horses cannot do. It being a horse species means it likes many of the same things its land-based counterparts do such as eating hay.
It having wings means the fantasy pegasus offer a wide number of advantages, many of which are used in both in and out of battle. For instance, it can move at a dazzlingly quick rate of speed, making it the ideal means to transport messages so that their recipient can receive it as soon as possible. These advantages make it a great asset, provided it exists in said world.
Where can such an incredible, majestic beast be found? The pegasus appears in many places, some where it is part of a herd that roams around freely and others where it lives a life of solitude. Since it has wings, it can easily go from one place to another, searching for food and water, meaning it has a ton of options to choose from when searching for a place to live.

The pegasus is a wonderful creature. It has the majestic aura of the horse, which inspires people whenever it passes them by and gallops something fierce. What truly separates the two is that it has wings that stretch out just a bit, giving it the ability to fly and when it soars high up in the sky, it is a sight to behold.
Though the fantasy pegasus looks identical to a horse and comes in different colors, it is commonly depicted with the color white. This is due to it having a strong association with the forces of light which are customarily clad in the same color. As such, it only carries people it recognizes as a servant of light or the good side.
It has powerful hooves that can easily knock someone off his feet. This creature uses them to remove pesky nuisances and clear a path for either itself or its herd to move forward. Moreover, when it isn’t flying, it moves with graceful agility so that it can reach its destination in earnest.
A tamed fantasy pegasus chooses its rider. That is, it is selective about who can sit atop it and will only permit the person it has developed a bond with to take it as his steed. Once it has chosen its rider, it is loyal to the utmost end and will follow his command, no matter what. Should it sense its master being in danger, it will move swiftly to rescue him and get him to safety.
In its free time, the pegasus enjoys spending time with its master. It particularly likes it when he brushes its hair and long, luxurious mane. This beast affectionately nickers and rubs its head on his arm. It also likes it when its rider speaks to it and it brays and neighs in response.
The pegasus having wings gives it many opportunities that it can take, should it choose to, opportunities that don’t exist for many other animals. While the tamed ones have even more options, the wild ones still have a decent amount to work with. Some seize the chance whereas others eschew them, instead seeking a solitary life.
One major advantage of the fantasy pegasus is that it can serve as a messenger. Due to it being able to fly, it can cross great distances in a short amount of time, making it easier for messages to get to their destination. This becomes especially useful in times of war when commanders and military leaders require constant updates and the pegasus enables them to get them without having to wait too long.
The second opportunity for this winged creature is to act as an escort. It can safely transport someone from one place to another, which is great for those who need to reach their destination in a certain period of time. It can swiftly cross mountain peaks, leapfrog over the top of trees, and steer away from approaching storms that can potentially cut off all travel.
One area where the fantasy pegasus truly shines is on the battlefield. It can gallop at a mesmerizingly high rate of speed and catch its foes off guard. It can also dart out from the sky and knock them off kilter. Moreover, it can remain high up in midair, allowing its rider to strike the enemy army without fear of counterattacks, at least from those on land.
When it comes to aerial capabilities, the pegasus has them in spades. Its high agility lets it nimbly go around enemies like birds and in close combat, it uses its hooves to land powerful blows on them, causing them to lose control and fall to the ground. In the event a foe proves too difficult to defeat, it’ll resort to biting and it can leave a deep gash in the other’s body that will need to be stitched up.
Of all the animals of the fantasy genre, the pegasus is ranked among the most fascinating which begets the question? If one is so inclined, where can he find such an incredible creature? The thing of it is, it varies from world to world, meaning there are no notable commonalities when it comes to finding it which only compounds the difficulty of searching for it.
One thing is for sure when it comes to the fantasy pegasus and it would be that it likes areas where it has great access to food and water. Much like horses, it likes to nibble on grass and hay and drink water, making it likely to live in places like forests, grasslands, decent bodies of water like lakes and rivers.
Since it has wings, the pegasus can fly anywhere in the world and choose a place to call home. In rare cases, it’ll live somewhere on a mountain, as long as it has everything it needs. Whenever it feels like it’s running out of food and water, it’ll take to the sky and search for another habitat to call home.
This winged beast is particularly fond of temperate climates. It shuns areas that have extreme temperatures like deserts or tundras, choosing instead to live in sunny, verdant places that have billowing winds. Sometimes it’ll move to a beach, especially one on a secluded tropical island where it doesn’t have to worry about seeing a human.
Many of the aforementioned places don’t just apply to one who’s living by himself, they apply to one living in a herd as well. The herd moves together in unison, typically following the stallion who is considered its leader. They don’t stay in one place for too long, they like to move on where they can explore new territory and see which ones are good sites for them to stay, at least for a bit.
The fantasy pegasus is an excellent addition to worldbuilding in that it doesn’t just do all the things a horse can do; it can do things its surface counterpart can’t! It having wings opens up a whole new world and it uses them to great success, becoming one of the fastest creatures in the world.
