What is associated with blood and the nighttime? If you thought of a fantasy vampire, you’re right. This monster is a mainstay in the genre, appearing in many works and there’s a reason why it keeps popping up. It is a goldmine in terms of storytelling potential, meaning you can use it in many fantastic ways.
Across the works it’s appeared in, the vampire takes the same form. It masquerades as a human by day but when the sun sets and the moon takes over, that’s when it truly comes to life. Its true form emerges, allowing it to roam around and its appearance generates fear in those who are unlucky to see it in its terrifying splendor.
The fantasy vampire has a strong appetite for blood which drives every single decision it makes during the night hours. It is aware that it only has a limited time before dawn to get blood, meaning it is more than willing to do whatever it takes to get blood. It will feast upon those who don’t see it coming which comes with some risk for their victims.
Luckily, there are measures people can take to guard against such an evil monster. One common method is to carry garlic, which vampires cannot abide. While not everyone has access to it, the garlic will most certainly keep them at bay. Unfortunately, carrying this food will result in a strong stench emanating from those who have it, meaning they’ll need to work hard to eliminate that aroma.

The vampire is one of the genre’s longstanding monsters, being one of the first to appear in it. Through countless years and numerous appearances across various media, it has remained consistent in terms of physical appearance, with only subtle variations depending on the world and story it’s in.
Many stories depict this monster as remaining inside during the daytime so that it doesn’t get burnt in the light, only coming out at nighttime. Some have it go outside and its human side is dominant at that point, making it less likely the light will destroy it outright. Regardless of if it ventures outside or not, its appearance doesn’t change that much.
By day, the fantasy vampire looks just like anyone else, taking the form of an ordinary person, whether it be male or female. It goes to work, spends time with its family and friends, and pursue its favorite leisure activities. All this happens during the daytime when the light is abundant and the nighttime is only some time away.
When day turns to night, that’s when things change and not for the good. The vampire’s human form gives way to its true form, a pale, grayish monster with visible fangs that looks like its daytime counterpart. It becomes a monster devoid of reason but it suddenly has an obsession to consume blood.
The eyes of the fantasy vampire are cold with no hint of warmth. This is because its humanity has disappeared, being supplanted by one of a twisted animal. Its eyes continuously scour the area, searching for victims, both near and far.
This monster wouldn’t be considered a vampire if it didn’t have an affinity for blood. Regardless of the world it appears in, this creature constantly seeks it out and will bite just about anyone in order to get it. The lengths it is willing to go to just to get some blood should terrify everyone.
The reason why the fantasy vampire has a fanatical desire for blood is because it is its sustenance. It needs it in order to live and going too long without it causes it to lose its energy and it may wither up and die. When it is at that stage, it is more dangerous than ever since it will attack the closest person to drain their blood.
The target the vampire chooses can be seemingly random at first glance but if you dig deep into it, you’ll notice it was strategic. While it’s true it will go after anyone, it has proclivities towards certain physical appearances or personality quirks. For instance, one might be more drawn to younger adults whereas another might prefer the middle-aged or the elderly or someone with blue eyes.
When the fantasy vampire moves to attack, he approaches his target and sinks his fangs in him. As he leeches off his prey’s blood, it fills him with renewed energy and vigor while making the other depressed and full of despair. The vampire then proceeds to leave him in a crumpled heap.
A person has a chance of becoming a vampire when he is attacked by one. All vampires carry a gene that can be transmitted during the bite. The chances of becoming one is the same regardless of how many times someone is bitten. While there are medicines that can stave it off, it needs to be tended to immediately, for the longer it remains untreated, the chances of turning into one grow.
The vampire ranks among the top in terms of power. It can siphon blood from its prey and move about at nighttime but it is not all powerful. There are steps people can take to protect themselves should they be unlucky enough to cross paths with one. Knowing and executing them can mean the difference between living life as a normal human and turning into such a monster.
The best way to avoid contact with a fantasy vampire is to remain inside during the nighttime. That is, if someone needs to do something, it can wait until morning when the light is out and the vampires have retreated to the seclusion of the darkness. While this doesn’t necessarily guarantee 100% safety, it significantly lessens the chances since it means the monster will need to break in in order to get blood. This gives people more time to find weapons to guard themselves should one break into their home.
One of the best anti-vampire remedies is to have garlic. It could be inside the house or should someone need to step outside in the nighttime, he should have some garlic with him. Vampires abhor the smell and will flee though the person who has it should clean himself so that that stench doesn’t permanently remain on him.
Another way to guard against a fantasy vampire is to have a weapon that is imbued with a holy power which can slay one. It could be a sword or dagger, essentially something with a pointy stick that can be driven into the monster’s heart. Admittedly, such weapons are rare, making it less likely everyone can have one, let alone afford it. This is a sure-fire way of ending a vampire’s reign of terror since the holy light emanating from within it will ultimately destroy it.
Should someone find himself in the crosshairs of an evil monster, he can strive to keep it at bay until the first light of dawn. If the vampire is still outside when sunlight begins creeping upon the land, it will reach him and cause him to writhe in agony as he begins to wither away. It cannot tolerate the light and before long, it’ll have dissipated into thin air, never to plague the world ever again.
The fantasy vampire is an interesting monster. It drains blood from other people in order to live and it does so at regular intervals. It also pops up at nighttime and wreaks havoc across the dark hours but it is not so mighty that it cannot be vanquished. All these reasons are why you should include it in your story and world, for it can be used to tell a wide variety of stories!
