The Premise

The dark powers don’t just rely on malevolent magic and intimidation in their never ending effort in world domination, they also command legions of sinister beasts. The fantasy troll is one such beast and this monster poses a grave threat to those who fight for the side of good, for it is notoriously difficult to slay. Even the best soldiers have trouble taking down one!

The troll is well known for being taller than many humans and other humanoids like elves. Its great height is both an asset and a liability but that doesn’t deter the dark lord from fielding it in battle or having it do things that only it can do. In fact, it isn’t just a heavy soldier, it uses its great hulk to clear out enemies and move heavy objects.

Where might one find the fantasy troll, if one is curious? As a servant of evil, it abhors light, preferring instead the coziness of the dark. In fact, many of its habitants overlap that of the orc which it commonly appears alongside in battle. The two races have some synergy between the two of them which makes them a deadly combo to face in combat.

Regarding its position in the world, the troll is a heavy soldier but that isn’t its only purpose. While it might delight in wreaking havoc upon the world, this tall brute packs a powerful punch, capable of breaking down even iron doors with a strong hammer. Moreover, it can maneuver enemy vehicles like siege towers or catapults into position.

The Great Size of the Fantasy Troll

This silhouette of a fantasy bounty hunter is in black with a white question mark on his body. The silhouette stands in front of a blue-green diamond background with the blue anchored directly behind the bounty hunter.

In all of the adaptations it appears in across the genre, the troll is depicted as a tall, ugly creature, some have muscles and some don’t. This grotesque appearance only solidifies the notion that it would be a mistake to underestimate the strength that it has despite the fact that it moves a little faster than a snail.

The fantasy troll has a hideous face full of hatred. It uses it in combination with its height to strike fear in its foes, rendering them immobilized while it moves in to take them out. Though it moves slowly, it carries a weight that makes it notoriously difficult to dislodge or knock down onto the ground.

With how tall it is, it favors weapons that take full advantage of both its height and girth. As such, the mace club is its preferred choice of weapon since it doesn’t need to worry about much knockback when using it in combat. It can use it to break up a crowded field of enemies in just a number of seconds.

The great size of the fantasy troll comes with both pros and cons. For instance, it is essentially a mobile fortress, one difficult to kill, more so if it has armor on. However, its height makes it easy for it to stand out and be pelted with arrows or other ranged weapons in the thick of battle.

Its tremendous power enables it to do things that orcs and other evil servants can’t such as move mechanical equipment in battle. On the other hand, transporting them makes them vulnerable to attack. When it is engaged in combat, it hits its foes with such a devastating punch that they fall to the ground but it has a windup time that they exploit to prevent the troll from bringing the attack to fruition.

Where the Fantasy Troll Lives

A landscape with mountains, erupting volcano, lava river, and cliffs.

This tall brute, as a servant of evil, is particularly fond of places filled with darkness. There are plenty of such areas in the world and well-experienced travelers avoid them at all costs. Should they have no choice but to venture through a place infested with trolls, they carry swords and other weapons for protection but they strive to avoid coming into contact with them.

The typical fantasy troll loves caves. Any kind will do, from the regular one found practically all over the world to its icy counterpart. The reason why trolls are enamored of caves is that they can easily go inside when the sun starts to rise and wait until nighttime falls so that they can go outside and scavenge for food.

Another popular area trolls like are the heart of the mountains. Though they receive little sunlight, they provide plenty of cover for trolls and these vicious monsters can ambush unsuspecting travelers and feast upon their remains. Some of these mountains have a cave system where they can go in and out at will.

Whenever a dark power begins rising, it draws all those attuned to evil to the site it calls home. Trolls wind up moving there and begin building a colony as they work to enforce the dark lord’s will. Since they despise the sunlight, in return for their service, the dark lord creates clouds that constantly blot it out, enabling them to freely move at will without having to contend with the light.

The fantasy troll also loves secluded areas like a vast forest or an abandoned mine. In the former, the tree canopy is so thick that barely any light reaches the ground, meaning that the troll can appear anywhere in said forest at all times of the day. The latter is where it can cause trouble for people who have chosen to step foot in such a scary environment since it can attack them from anywhere inside the mine.

How the Fantasy Troll Fits in the World

The troll serves a multifaceted role in the world. Its versatility lends itself to doing many things, chiefly in the servitude of the forces of darkness, that cause trouble for their enemies. The dark lord makes excellent use of these hideous creatures whether fielding them in battle or having them guard important personnel.

One way the fantasy troll is used is in battle where it does several things. One is to clear out an area nestled with foes that are difficult to dislodge. Several strong swings will cause them to scatter, giving the dark forces room to move in and deal with the remnants. Another is to use its weight to carry heavy hammers capable of breaking down a door, thereby opening up a path for its sinister cohorts to press forward.

When the troll isn’t battling, it’s moving heavy military equipment like catapults or battering rams. Its considerable strength is used to help position them so that they can operated by orcs or other monsters to wreak havoc on the battlefield. Transporting them leaves them vulnerable to attack though they are escorted by a garrison of orcs to keep them safe.

In rare cases, the fantasy troll is assigned to guard duty. It can guard fortresses or strongholds invaluable to the dark lord or his top underlings. It stands outside and only a select few are able to freely enter or depart without getting into trouble with it.

From attacking travelers to pushing a siege tower full of orcs, the troll is not just an one-dimensional monster. It is a weapon of destruction and chaos and the dark lord is only happy to use it to advance his goals which makes it a great choice to bring into your world and your story.
