Overview

The king of a fictional nation doesn’t just run it all by himself. There’s simply too many decisions he would have to make everyday for all of its inhabitants that it just isn’t feasible. Rather, he has a royal council who serves at his pleasure who carries out the day-to-day affairs of the government. The person who holds such an exalted position is known as the fantasy royal advisor.

The position of royal advisor is typically held by prominent nobles and other figures who play a large role in the realm. This is due to the fact that they’ve amassed enough information as well as wielding substantial power as to make others not wish to challenge them for supremacy. As such, the council is comprised of the most powerful people in the kingdom.

As to what goes into appointing a fantasy royal advisor, well it varies by world. In some cases, the king chooses close family friends regardless of their qualifications whereas other times, he puts in people who are experts in their fields. Sometimes he will give it to certain nobles in order to keep them loyal to the crown which is a useful strategic tool he has at his disposal.

In the grand scheme of things, the royal advisor’s purpose is to help the king run the realm. As one of his top representatives, he is to implement whatever regulations and policies the monarch wishes to enact into law and to ensure that they are carried out in a timely manner, provided they affect the sphere of government he oversees. He is also expected to deal with whatever issues come up during his tenure and only consult with the king on all major pertinent issues.

Who’s Likely to be a Fantasy Royal Advisor?

When it comes to the post of royal advisor, it is considered an honor to sit among the council where you are empowered to make decisions that will shape not just the part of the government you’re in charge of but the realm at large. However, such a position isn’t just given out to anyone. Only certain criteria must be met when appointing someone.

People associate kings with medieval times. You know what else is also associated with that era? The nobility. This class is the upper echelon of society and from within its ranks the king plucks people of noteworthy importance to sit on the council, serving for however long the monarch wishes to keep him there. Sometimes some nobles will remain in the council until the day they die.

But not just any noble will do. Instead, the king taps the most powerful to help him run the kingdom. They come from the most important families in the realm and are known for various things such as their expertise in seafaring, food production, and so on. Of course, there are some families who schemed their way into power, blackmailing and destroying rivals during their campaign for power.

Though the typical fantasy royal advisor might be a member of the nobility, other important people can also be a member of the council. It could be a preeminent scientist or scholar, a venerated religious figure, or someone with an extensive spy network. They bring a different perspective to the nobility-dominated council.

Sometimes the king will have members of the royal family be part of the council. His wife, the queen, or his mother can join in and offer their thoughts on the issues of the day. In some worlds, the prince, the heir to the throne, is expected to officially join the council when he is of age where he can start familiarizing himself with how to lead and work with the members when he becomes king.

What Goes into Appointing a Fantasy Royal Advisor?

A bunch of flying red question marks in light gray clouds with wings. The question marks are flying high up in the skies as seen with the blue sky and white clouds. They represent the various types of fantasy occupations.

With the position of royal advisor a coveted one among the majority of the nobility, the question then is: what goes into appointing someone to sit on such a honored position? The answer to that depends on the world and the person on the throne.

In some worlds, the king selects the best candidate from a lengthy list to be a fantasy royal advisor. They are experts in their fields, whether it be in business or medicine, and possess the know-how to bring with them as they begin their stint in government. In this vein, having the absolute best people run the government makes things easier since they know what needs to be done and they have the power to make it happen.

Unfortunately the majority of kings don’t subscribe to the idea of populating the council with people who are the best candidates. Rather, some dole out these posts to loyalists as rewards for their continued patronage to the crown. These sycophants are then free to do whatever they like, knowing perfectly well that the king won’t lift a finger to keep them in line.

In other worlds, the average fantasy royal advisor is comprised of a member of one of the most powerful families in the kingdom. It would be an insult to the family to not be one of the king’s advisers and they would voice their displeasure for all to hear. When it comes to appointing members of his council, the king cannot overlook all the powerful families, lest they use being slighted by him in order to cause trouble across the land.

There are some places where crafty kings are shrewd enough to use the post of royal advisor to keep certain families tied to the crown and to the realm. By bringing in someone from such a family, the king is using the member as leverage to ensure that the family thinks twice about rebelling or making a move against him. As time goes on, the family becomes less likely to oppose him since they have more at stake and eventually it becomes too intertwined with that of the royalty to be able to mount an effective challenge against him.

Where the Fantasy Royal Advisor Fits in the World

The core function of the advisor is to carry out the king’s agenda, at least the part that affects the part of government he manages. However, this isn’t the only thing the advisor is known for. In fact, regarding the world, he is an influential figure simply due to his position and he uses it to his advantage.

Some advisers serve as diplomats, interacting with foreign dignitaries both abroad and within the realm. They act as the king’s personal representatives, conveying to people from different nations the king’s wishes, whether it be about trade or information. They then report back to the monarch so that he can make his next move.

Sometimes the fantasy royal advisor is empowered to make trade proposals, provided he’s already discussed it with the king beforehand and received his blessing to proceed. After some negotiating with his counterpart, he is able to strike up a deal though he needs to apprise the king before it can become official. If he is pleased with the deal, the monarch will sign the papers; if not, either the advisor has to go back to the drawing board or drop it wholly and try again later on.

On the home stage, the advisor is tasked with implementing the king’s goals insofar to the ones that personally affect the sphere of government he oversees. He is expected to swiftly enact it. Whatever issues that arise, he strives to settle it in a timely manner and if there proves one too thorny to deal with himself, he informs the king so that he can make the final decision on how to put it to bed.

All advisers have the power to run the part of government they are head of any way they see fit, as long as they judiciously bring the king’s agenda to fruition. They are duly expected to update him on how things are going at the council meetings which occur on a regular basis. If they wish to make sweeping changes, they must consult with the king before proceeding to see if he will support it or not.

Tying it all Together

The post of royal advisor is considered one of the most powerful in all of the realm. This is because the advisor will work with the king on a number of matters, essentially becoming one of his personal representatives. This leads the citizens to see him as someone who is authorized to speak on behalf of the king.

This highly coveted position is customarily held by someone of noteworthy stature. It could be simply a powerful noble, a wealthy aristocrat, a preeminent scientist, or religious figure. This person brings with him a deep wealth of knowledge and connections that will prove useful both to himself and to the king as he dutifully works with him.

The king has the power to appoint anyone a fantasy royal advisor. A weak-minded one is more likely to surround himself with yes-men, men of unscrupulous character who will use the position to enrich themselves and their cronies, knowing nothing will happen to them. A strong-willed monarch chooses the most talented to assist him in running the kingdom, believing that their superb knowledge will be put to good use.

The advisor’s chief duties are to run the part of the royal government he’s in charge of and to implement the king’s rules and regulations. Those are his domestic obligations but he also has foreign ones. He can hold diplomatic summits with his counterparts from other nations to discuss a medley of issues and convey the king’s wishes to them.

The job of fantasy royal advisor is an interesting one. There’s a plethora of storytelling potential here and if done correctly, it can add a fascinating dimension to the politics of a fantasy world!
