There are as many occupations as there are fantasy worlds. However, there’s still so much for people to learn about the world that they call home and that’s where the fantasy researcher comes in. His job is to learn as much about as he can and document his findings so he can pass it onto his colleagues and those who come after him.
The researcher operates in the same vein as his real-world counterpart. He endeavors to unveil all of the world’s mysteries so that he and other people can use what he learned to help them understand how it works. Knowing how it works makes it easier for them to adapt to it whenever it changes which can occur frequently.
Most of the time, the fantasy researcher works all by his lonesome. He either works from home or at the laboratory where he studies a variety of subjects, all in the name of scientific understanding. He conducts experiments to see how the subjects he is studying reacts to different things. There’ll be times where he goes out to do some fieldwork.
While the researcher spends most of his time working by himself, there’ll be times where he’ll work with other people, notably those who are studying the same thing as he is. Working on the same thing from different perspectives can lead to a clash of opinions or a spur of excitement to see their efforts bear fruit.
As for the world, the purpose of the fantasy researcher is to explore its secrets and chronicle everything he discovers about it to help everyone who lives in it learn about the world they live in. Knowing more about the world they call home enables people to take more of an active interest in it and find a better way to coexist with the natural forces shaping it.
This is article number thirty-three in the series going over the different types of fantasy occupations. If you want more, go to our blog page. Surely you’ll find something that catches your eye!
Regardless of the era a fictional world is in, there will always be people who have an innate curiosity in unlocking the secrets it has. They will spend the entire duration of their career studying various aspects of it, from observing the wildlife to studying the weather. They typically jot down their observations and thoughts each day in a journal or something else so that they can easily refer back to it when needed.
The fantasy researcher spends long hours working by himself, either at home or at the lab. While it’s true that a great many shun socialization, they do so not because they don’t want to be around people but because their work takes precedence over interacting with others. They are so devoted to their work that they will spend days or weeks without anyone seeing them.
A researcher naturally gravitates towards the subjects he finds interesting. For instance, one who enjoys the company of animals will study their behavior and how they interact with each other as opposed to one who’s actively interested in electromagnetism and seeks to find a way to use it to help the world.
No matter what he’s working on, a fantasy researcher will conduct various experiments on it. These experiments let him see how it reacts to things like fire and ice since it’ll have different reactions. The reactions he observes gives him better insight into how it works which he will document in his journal.
While he can do a great many things in his lab or at home, the researcher will also need to go out in the field. Seeing things occur naturally gives him a treasure trove of information he couldn’t otherwise obtain while in the lab since he cannot replicate the natural conditions exactly in his lab.
The occupation of the researcher is a noble one though it can also be lonely. He is helping people learn about the place they live in and while he tries to do all the work by himself, there’ll be times where he’ll have to partner up with other people, especially if they’re working on the same thing. Most of the time, it’s a blessing but every now and then, joining forces with someone else can backfire.
Every researcher views the world based on their experiences. That is, there are no two that see it the exact same way. Working with someone who doesn’t see the world how you see it can be a good thing or not. It forces the researcher to take into account information that he might have missed, info that could prove crucial in his efforts to unravel the mystery he’s working on.
For the ones who are collaborating with a colleague or more, the relationship they can have varies from a very cooperative one to a nebulous one. In the former, they are cheerfully working together towards a common mission, eagerly sharing the info they have with each other with the aim of helping the other as opposed to the latter where they can go as far as to sabotage an experiment or steal their info while giving them snippets of the info they’ve already gathered.
The researcher’s loneliness has to do with his steadfast dedication to his work which can hamper his ability to interact with people on a daily basis. He spends the vast majority of his time working hard which drastically limits the time he can socialize with others, including his friends and family.
In some cases, the researcher has an uneasy relationship with the local townsfolk. This is because he is seldom seen out and about except doing fieldwork, leading people to view him as a recluse or someone who prefers the company of what he’s working on to other people. Eventually, he will amass a reputation that will be difficult for him to shake off.
An imaginary world is awash in secrets. However, unraveling them isn’t for the faint of heart; only those who have an iron will can successfully unlock one or more of them. The researcher just happens to be one of these occupations that are perfect to unlock the world’s secrets.
A fantasy researcher has the mindset that he wants to learn as much as he can about the world he and everyone else resides in. He wants to use what he learns to help make a better world for everyone and he does so by documenting all of his findings so that he doesn’t forget what he learned. As a bonus, he can use them as a foundation on which to build, especially when he is working on a more advanced project.
The info a researcher gathers throughout his career can lead to profound changes in the world. For instance, studying how a plant grows can pave the way for more people to grow more plants, notably those that bear fruits and vegetables, increasing the amount of food available for them to eat. This can also result in the development of fertilizer or other plant-growth products.
A fantasy researcher is quite useful when working on developing new sources of power. Studying the power of wind, the tides, and others help people understand how they work, a critical step in the process of harnessing them. There will be some people who will develop a product capable of harnessing their sheer power, increasing the number of available power sources.
By making sense of the world works, the researcher makes it easier for everyone to understand it. For example, studying the weather enables him to develop instruments that can measure things like the wind speed or the amount of rain, important components of developing a forecasting system. This system helps people take action like taking a raincoat or something that will protect them during a rainstorm or take cover in a vicious hailstorm.
Though the researcher may spend long hours in the lab or out in the field, the information he amasses in his years will probe invaluable to everyone. They will use the info to make advancements in things like preserving the longevity of food, transportation, more durable housing materials, and so on. These advancements, in turn, will make living in the world better for all.
The typical researcher enjoys the solitude of working by himself. He can fully dedicate his focus on his work since it’s something he is passionate about. Unfortunately, he can get a bit too absorbed working to the detriment of the people who care about him. He can wind up missing priceless time with his friends and family.
When it comes to socialization, whether it be collaborating with a colleague or spending time with the people in his life, the researcher can excel or be an abysmal failure. With the former, their relationship can be fantastic and full of chemistry as they joyfully strive to complete what they’re working on or tense since they don’t fully trust one another. As for the latter, he has to try to balance out his work-home balance, lest he lose out on making memories that he’ll cherish for the rest of his life.
The researcher serves the world by studying its numerous secrets. He then jots down all of his findings in a journal or something he can use for quick reference when doing some work. Most of the time, he’ll share it with the world, hoping that doing so will help people learn a little bit about their world.
The things your audience sees, whether it’s in a book, movie, or video game, wouldn’t be possible without the researcher having spent time endeavoring to unravel the secrets of the world. Sure, this occupation might not be as glamorous as that of a wizard but it is nevertheless an integral one and you would be hard-pressed to not include it in the world you’re creating.
