The big bad of a fictional world doesn’t just rely on himself to cause trouble for everyone. He has underlings whose sole purpose is to carry out his will and work to bring his plans for world domination to fruition. One longstanding servant he uses is that of the feared fantasy orc, a savage brute monster with an desire for blood.
The orc, or goblin as it’s also known as, appears in many stories where he is one of the dark lord’s most vicious minions. This vile creature was bred specifically to wreak havoc across fair lands, sowing chaos and mayhem wherever he goes. As a weapon of the dark lord, the concept of mercy is foreign to him.
One useful aspect of the fantasy orc is his access to a wide variety of weapons which make him quite instrumental in the villain’s plans to take control of the world. He is commonly associated with swords, which are his main weapon of choice, since he prefers to engage in one-on-one combat with his foes. Some variants of orcs even slurp the blood on their swords just for the heck of it!
Where does the orc live? As a servant of darkness, he shuns places awash in the light, preferring instead dark places. The world is home to a variety of environments, some of which are perfect for the orc to inhabit. Places such as the depths of mountains are prime habitants for him to thrive and flourish.
This is article number two in the series exploring the various fantasy creatures. If you want to check out our other articles, you can find far more on our blog page!
The dark lord makes extensive use of all the monsters under his command. He gives the elite soldiers missions special missions that only they are capable of succeeding at. For the others, he uses them for virtually every mission and due to his sinister nature, the orc is one such.
The fantasy orc typically sports a twisted, malevolent grin on his disfigured face. His only interest is to cause blood, whether it be friend or foe, and feast upon their remains. Though he exists to do his master’s bidding, he does so with grisly glee and seeing the anguished cries of his enemies only fills his dark heart with joy.
Having been trained in the art of battle, this brutish beast is only concerned with killing as many of his enemies as he can. He views them as a threat to his master and he works to eliminate them so that the big bad of the story can prevail in the latest incarnation of the eternal war between good and evil. He is eager to do battle with them and charges at them so that he can start slaughtering them.
Mercy is something the orc doesn’t care about. If he has someone on the ropes, he won’t give him a second chance, choosing instead to end his life. After all, he is a threat that must be neutralized if his master is to win. For special enemies, he is instructed not to kill but to capture so that he can escort him to his superiors so that they can dole out the appropriate punishment.
Though the fantasy orc is loyal to the villain, he doesn’t harbor that same sentiment towards his fellow orcs. Goblins are known to get into skirmishes over little thing such as name-calling or insulting which causes consternation among his superiors who must constantly intervene to break up the brawl lest they wind up slaying each other.
The orc is trained in the art of slaughter. To aid him, he relies on several weapons after receiving training in how to use them properly. He is capable of wielding a great assortment of weapons which makes him a deadly force to be reckoned with both in battle and outside. He is not to be taken lightly in combat.
The main tool of choice the fantasy orc uses is the sword. This sharp-blade weapon can pierce the skin of his foe and send him to a quick and painful demise which is why most of the time it is the goblin’s favorite. Even though the vast majority receive basic training in the art of the sword, they are capable of using it to devastating effect.
A good number of orcs also like using bows or crossbows. These two weapons enable them to strike their target from afar and hearing their cries of anguish as the arrows dig into their skin brings them savage pleasure. These archers can rain fire upon the battlefield to weaken the enemy army before his fellow monsters move in to sweep up the remnants.
Another powerful weapon that is associated with the fantasy orc is the mace club. This club is capable of inflicting great damage upon collision, enough to either knock out someone or end his life outright. The goblins who utilize the mace could care less about collateral damage, even taking down a few of his fellow monsters as he swings it around madly.
Last and not least, the knife is a constant companion of the orc. When not using it to kill his foe, he uses it against animals to feast upon their remains. Whenever he gets into a brawl with another orc, he threatens to slice them to bits with their knives.
As an agent of darkness, the goblin eschews light and holy places, preferring instead those steeped in darkness or far away from the light. Whenever travelers or journeyers venture into dark places, they expect to cross paths with these brutes which means they carry swords and other weapons for protection since they know it’s just a matter of time before they engage in battle with them.
Places teeming in evil is a magnet for the fantasy orc. It could be the dark lord’s stronghold or a defiled holy site. Residing in these areas fills them with great strength and enables them to multiply in numbers at an alarming rate.
Other places drenched in pitch black are a natural candidate for the goblin to call home. One such is the depths of the mountain or in many cases, a mine. These two sites receive little to no light, making them the perfect place for them to infest.
Due to their hatred of the light, the fantasy orc prefers to live underground or in places that go beneath the ground like caves. They seldom venture outside except when the sky is gloomy and full of dark clouds. People who venture in these areas ought to pay extra attention to their surroundings, for the orc is well camouflaged living in such dark and desolate places.
Many stories depict the orc as a savage acolyte of the dark lord, working to advance his agenda. He is not to be trifled with since he possesses a never-ending appetite for bloodlust and will do whatever it takes to defeat his opponent in battle, whether it be friend and foe. The fantasy orc is a perfect evil monster to incorporate into your world and story, for he is a threat the protagonist cannot underestimate at all.
