The Premise

Life in a fantasy world is fraught with peril. Besides trying to make a decent living, people have to contend with a myriad of threats. Dragons, demons, and other monsters are just several of these threats. To help lift their spirits —and socialize with other people as well — many go to the bars and taverns spread out across the world and enjoy some drinks, all of which were made by a fantasy brewer.

Like its real world counterpart, the brewer creates drinks that other people consume. While an overwhelming majority have alcohol in them, there are some that don’t. The beauty of this occupation is that people will always want a drink or two or even more.

When it comes to creating a fantasy brewer, there are several types to think about. While an imaginary world seldom has just one, featuring multiple types increases the selection of drinks people can peruse. Each brewer has its own customers who are more fond of their drinks as opposed to the others.

Where are the best places for a brewer to work? Placing it in the right spot is key to success since there are some factors to take into consideration when determining where to plop the building. It needs to be in a place that makes sense for it to be, both for the business and for your audience, who will naturally want to learn more about it.

With the incredible number of beverages available in the world, it isn’t surprising that the role of the fantasy brewer is to make drinks. While the number one reason why people go into this occupation is to make money, there are those who have a great idea to create a new one that will take the world by storm.

This is article number twenty-eight in the fantasy occupations series. Curious to see what else we have to offer? You can find more on our blog page!

The Different Types of the Fantasy Brewer

The typical fictional world has more than one brewer. What they brew varies from world to world which helps make exploring them interesting. You never know what you’ll learn as you explore the world! The type of liquor available is heavily dictated by the species of plants that grow there.

One kind of fantasy brewer, and the one your audience will most likely be familiar with, is that of ale, which is made of wheat. This one appears in practically every world and is the go-to when it comes to designing a medieval world. In fact, it is so synonymous that having a world set in medieval times would feel out of place if there was no ale.

Another brewer you’ll see is one that uses fruits like grapes to make sophisticated beverages like champagne or wine. While not as popular as the ale, these fruit-based drinks attract their fair share of customers who tend to be higher on the social hierarchy. These brewers have vineyards and maintaining their businesses costs more money since it takes longer for the grapes to grow to the point where they can then be used to make drinks.

The third type of fantasy brewer is those who make cheap but affordable liquor like vodka or rum. These beverages are usually high in demand but bars and taverns are pretty good at keeping up with the demand. These drinks are geared towards the poor or lower middle-class.

The last kind of brewer is one you make yourself. The beauty of building your own world is that you get to create everything within it, including the brewer. You can come up with your own signature one that helps it stand out amid a crowded field.

Ideal Spots for the Fantasy Brewer to Work

Armed with the different types of brewers, it’s time to think about where they will work. The locations in which they’ll operate are dictated by a number of factors which differ from world to world. Always keep in the back of your mind that they need to be in areas that make sense for them business-wise.

A common element among the average fantasy brewer is to have their operations outside town. Realistically speaking, he needs vast tracts of land, both to grow the crops and fruits needed for the brewing process, and buildings to hold them and process them. It is for this reason why you don’t see their operations within the town’s boundaries.

A mountain range looms in the background with a purple sky above them. White clouds float by up in the sky.

The brewer also needs to be in an area that’s good weather-wise. Places that get too much rain or too little throughout the year will hamper the development of the plants the brewer needs to make a living. For the plants he needs, they ought to be in a place where they get just the right amount of rain to flourish.

The type of climate plays a major role in the business of a fantasy brewer. Temperate and tropical climates are excellent sites for brewers to work as opposed to arid or tundra climates that offer little incentive for them to establish operations there. The former two receive plenty of sunlight that encourages plant development whereas the latter two get either too much or too little light which doesn’t help plants grow.

And lastly, a brewer can’t do everything by himself. There’s simply too many things to do, meaning he’ll need employees. This is why many choose to be in close proximity to towns and cities so that they have an ample source of workers to recruit. He never has to worry about not having enough workers unless his business or the town goes under.

The Fantasy Brewer and the World

Everyone needs a break now and then. Even the protagonist needs a place to catch his breath while he’s battling to save the world from the forces of evil. Fortunately for them, there is an occupation dedicated to letting everyone enjoy what he has and they can find his products right in the bars and taverns of the world.

Mainly the fantasy brewer makes drinks and he sells them for a sizable profit but that isn’t the only thing he’s good for. It isn’t so much what he makes, it’s what comes with it. You see, the liquor and other beverages he produces offers a chance for people to just relax and let their worries fade away, at least for a bit.

Living in an imaginary world isn’t a walk in the park. People have to worry about things that we in the real world don’t like dark lords attempting to conquer the world. They need something that will give them a brief respite from their troubles and that’s where the brewer comes in.

In pints full of ale or the glass people have in their hands are delicious drinks that transport them to a place far away from where they are now. Where they go depends on their mind. Some go to the past and remember happier, carefree days whereas others think about what it would like to be someone else and live a life of luxury. Sadly, sometimes painful memories surface, making them relive experiences they’ll rather not want to.

There is great power in the things the fantasy brewer makes and the best part of it is, it’s something everyone all shares. From the most powerful king in the world to a destitute person who scrounged up just enough coins for a taste of his favorite drink, the brewer makes things that everyone enjoys.

Tying it all Together

The occupation of the brewer doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, it’s a lengthy process since there’s a lot to do in order to get it all set up. But once it gets going, it can really take off and the brewer will be able to make even more just to keep up with the growing demand.

A fictional world customarily has more than one type of fantasy brewer. Pretty much every world has its own version of the ever-popular ale and other drinks made of wheat. Other kinds of brewers you’ll come across are those that make liquor out of grapes like wine. There’s also no harm in devising your own!

The best spot for an aspiring brewer would be just outside the town where the owner and his employees live. The brewer needs fields or vineyards, depending on the drink he’s making, and buildings to house them in and convert them into liquid. Other factors such as the climate and weather affect how these plants grow and will determine whether the brewer has an excellent year or an abysmal one.

In the world, the brewer is known for making yummy drinks found in many locations. He uses his knowledge of the brewing process to deliver not just drinks but an experience. When enjoying his products, people experience a range of emotions from recalling younger days, pleasant memories of loved ones, and those who are no longer in their lives.

The fantasy brewer is definitely an occupation you need in the world you’re building. Without him, there would be no place for people to get a moment’s peace after a long and tiring day. There would be no bars or taverns.
