Overview

There are many technological marvels no matter which era a fantasy world takes place in. These marvels help shape the world your story takes place since they impact them in various ways. No matter what they are, they wouldn’t be possible without the occupation of the fantasy engineer.

The engineer is hardworking in nature, always striving to make things easier for everyone else. He dreams big and drafts up blueprints to bring his dream to fruition and then he gets to work. Regardless of how long it takes him, he will get the job done. Once said job is completed, he moves onto the next one and the process repeats itself all over again.

The fantasy engineer designs things that stand the test of time, enduring long after he’s passed on. Things are roads, bridges, and other works are an economic boon to society and help make civilized life possible. Whenever someone has a problem about a building, road, and so on, he knows just the person to get in touch with.

When working on a project, the engineer relies on several tools. While his mind is number one, there are other tools he uses in tandem to bring the project to completion, regardless of the stage it’s in. Other tools like his writing instrument, who is his best friend, help him in his endeavors.

In the grand scheme of things, the occupation of the fantasy engineer operates as a builder. He develops the schematics for whatever project he’s commissioned to work on and brings in the crew to make it happen and he does so with great aplomb.

The amazing Capabilities of the Fantasy Engineer

The engineer is one occupation that makes civilized life possible. Without him, things people take for granted like fresh food or clothes would be more difficult to get and life would be harder. Living in a fictional world is already tough enough, what with orcs, dragons, werewolves, and other dangerous creatures strewn across it!

One major contribution the fantasy engineer makes is building the almighty road. Whether it’s stone, dirt, brick, or something else, the road links two distant places to each other, making traversing between them easier, especially through harsh terrain. Roads also dominate towns and cities, enabling people and businesses to have buildings in these places.

A gray rock outcropping overlooking a lake surrounded by a white plain. Three mesas loom in the distance with a red tower sitting atop the middle one. The tower contains a yellow orb near its top. Above the mesas is a bright blue sky with oval-shaped clouds. The tower, mesas, the lake are examples of realism in fantasy.

There are a fair number of rivers scattered across the world. While they have shallow crossings, most of these waterways are too deep to cross safety and that’s where bridges come in. The engineer works hard in creating a safe passage across them so that people can get to their destination without getting soaked or getting trapped underwater.

Buildings line the streets and avenues of towns and cities. Whether they’re a one-story house or one fifty stories high, all these structures were built with an engineer. He works with the architect as he designs one to ensure it has the adequate foundation and the right materials that will let it last for a long time. Sometimes he will oversee the construction to ensure that it is being built exactly to specifications.

Other areas where you’ll find a fantasy engineer range from the military to specialized civilian companies like transportation. In the military, the engineer develops components of war like siege towers that require intricate mechanisms to work correctly. For companies, the engineer creates things like ships or carriages that need power sources to move.

Tools the Fantasy Engineer Uses

The engineer is a builder by nature. He seeks to make things using the materials he has at his disposal in an efficient way. So what does he need to make it happen?

First and foremost, a fantasy engineer uses his mind. A brilliant one sees possibilities where other people don’t and works to bring that to reality. He may spend hours drawing up different blueprints to throw out different possibilities as he works to find the one that speaks the most to him. His mind has to be razor-sharp at all times so that he can seize it when opportunity comes knocking.

Besides his mind, the engineer has a trusty writing instrument. The pen, quill pen, or whatever else lets him take what he’s thinking and puts them in a concrete form. He can draw blueprints, etch his thoughts on the project, etcetera. He can also make changes if he is displeased with what he sees.

A bunch of flying red question marks in light gray clouds with wings. The question marks are flying high up in the skies as seen with the blue sky and white clouds. They represent the various types of fantasy occupations.

Papers are an invaluable tool to the engineer. They are where he spends many hours doing various activities like designing blueprints and so on. The best part is he can easily refer back to them when needed.

A lot of the time, the engineer will be doing fieldwork. He’ll do things like making measurements or checking the soil quality to determine whether the proposed foundation can sit atop it safely. He has a bevy of tools, like a tape measure or compass, at his disposal. He’ll use the appropriate tool when the time comes calling.

Sometimes he’ll do some quality assessments. He’ll check to see if materials like brick or stone can withstand the immense pressure that will soon be brought upon them. He’ll perform a series of experiments, both out in the field or in his workspace, using a litany of different tools to ensure that they don’t crumble apart.

Where Does the Fantasy Engineer Fit in the World?

The engineer is one of very few professions essential to creating an imaginary world that exists far beyond what your audience sees. It’s because the engineer is a builder by nature; he seeks to make things that endure the slow passage of time and he uses materials that have a long live to keep what he builds sturdy and not have to repair them for a long time.

This occupation is integral in constructing a dynamic civilization. It creates things that are used everyday like roads and buildings, thereby letting people live in homes and businesses open up shops where they sell merchandise that their customers buy. Additionally, it also connects different parts of the world, enabling people to forge closer ties with those who live in other cities or lands.

Knowing how to write in 1st person means seeing everything through the eyes of a character. A road running towards the mountain in the background with a forest on the right side and a lake on the left. Behind the lake is a series of hills. Above the hills and mountains is a orange gradient sky with five clouds.

The fantasy engineer, while he is a builder, he is also a dreamer. He continually seeks to construct things that will make everyone’s lives better. Creating faster ships that use a different power source like steam, developing waterproof carriages, or inventing a whole new type of roof are among the things he thinks of.

Whenever someone wants something built like a warehouse or bridge in an area, he brings in an engineer who will survey it. The engineer assesses the area to determine whether it is feasible for building and if not, he can give recommendations on how to make it work. He can rest assured that the engineer will give him the information he needs before deciding whether to proceed with it or not.

Part of the job description for an fantasy engineer is maintaining things. Periodically, he will check on them to see whether they’re weakening or not. If so, he can work to strengthen them. Regular maintenance minimizes the risk of an accident or something falling apart which can seriously injure people.

Tying it all Together

A fictional world just couldn’t exist without the hardworking ethic of the fantasy engineer. The things he builds makes it possible for people to live their lives and pursue their dreams without having to worry about having to build a house or finding a way to their destination.

The engineer loves to build things. They serve as a testament to his incredible capabilities. This occupation is known for constructing things like roads, ships, castles, and so on. People are continually amazed by seeing their incredible feats and consider them part of the desire for progress.

A fantasy engineer doesn’t just rely on his mind when he’s working on a project. Yes, his mind is the most valuable tool he uses but it isn’t the only one at his disposal. He has other tools like his writing instrument or compass, depending on what he’s doing. These tools enable him to draft blueprints, make measurements out on the field, and so on, all of which are imperative to the project’s success.

The engineer’s role in the world is that of a builder. He works hard and spends long hours in his various projects to construct things that last for a long time and are used by a great many people. Whenever he completes a job, he just moves onto the next one and he works towards bigger and bolder projects.

The fantasy engineer is a cornerstone of making a fantasy world. He makes it possible for the people of your world to live their lives far beyond what your audience sees. In short, without him, the civilization your readers are learning out just wouldn’t exist and that is why bringing this occupation into your world is an excellent idea!
