There is one social class that is wholly on its own level; no other comes even close to it. This particular class is considered one of the most popular aspects of the fantasy genre, appearing in numerous works, and for good reason. This class is none other than the fabled fantasy wizards.
Why are wizards a social class, not an occupation? It is really a combination of both but the reason why it’s the former is because it comes with its own norms that much of conventional society don’t subscribe to. In other words, it has its own set of rules though the vast majority of wizards are part of normal society.
Fantasy wizards don’t just exclusive apply to one specific group. It covers all the different types of magic users such as necromancers. All these different groups are collectively part of this magical society, each serving their own purpose.
The lifestyles of wizards are largely dictated by the world they call home. In some, they live reclusive lives, far away from people where they dedicate their entire lives studying arcane books and delving deeper into magic to unlock its secrets. In other words, they are very social and an integral part of the world, becoming power players as they make moves against their foes.
In the world, fantasy wizards are seen as powerful people. They are either a force of good or evil and depending on which side they’re affiliated with, they help or hinder people. Furthermore, their magical abilities makes people view them as leaders, whether they deserve it or not.
This is the sixth article in the social classes series. For more, take a gander at our blog page where we have new articles added each week!
When people think of wizards, they imagine men with long beards wearing robes like Gandalf or Dumbledore. This is true for many worlds but not all. You also have many young ones like Harry Potter and malevolent ones like Ganondorf or Saruman. There’s a reason why wizards are very popular in all forms of media.
However, fantasy wizards aren’t just the only magic users. Rather, they’re part of a larger community teeming with all kinds of magic-wielding people. Others like dark lords or sorcerers form part of the community. Each group brings with it unique aspects that no other features.
Dark lords are the second most popular group of wizards, principally serving as the major antagonist in many works. Villains such as Voldemort and Sauron inspire fear among their acolytes and enemies due to their deep breath of magical powers and devious cunning. They use powers no other would dare to use.
Some factions like necromancers specialize in one thing though there are some users who use other powers like black magic. They dedicate their entire lives gaining more knowledge in their field so that they can either use it for themselves or bestow it upon their followers so that they can continue their work after they’ve passed. Some have the desire to push the boundaries and forge new ground.
Humans and humanoid-like races aren’t the only ones who have magical powers. In some cases, animals can use magic as well. Some use their magical powers to communicate with people or sharpen their natural instincts to make them truly stand out from among their kind.
The beauty of fantasy is that the possibilities of those who can be magic users are endless and only you, the creator, can make it happen!
How do wizards live when they’re not battling their enemies or traveling the world? After all, it depends on the world they live in. Each world is different, meaning that those capable of wielding magic must learn to adapt and adhere to its rules. This is why many fantasy creators develop their own magic system which establishes and governs the rules all wizards and magic users must abide by.
One common lifestyle of fantasy wizards is to live in solitary, far away from urban centers. They might live in castles or towers but the reason for living so far away from people is that they can easily communicate with the natural world since they are surrounded by nature. They can observe the stars, easily keep track of what’s going on in the world, and keep an eye out for any signs of the rising darkness.
Another lifestyle wizards have is a deep thirst for knowledge. They read books all the time to learn new spells or unlock new abilities or skills that might prove useful down the road. They constantly scour the world, searching for books lost to the passage of time that might help them gain the knowledge they’ve been yearning for or to retrieve them before they wind up falling in the wrong hands.
In some worlds, socialization is key to success for fantasy wizards. They interact with people on a daily basis — think of the Harry Potter series where the people of that world converse with other magical folk or the muggles — and these interactions affect how the story unfolds. They develop friendships that pay off down the road, especially when the world faces an existential threat from the forces of darkness.
In other worlds, wizards are major players on the stage. While not representing a country officially, they have their own goals and plot their moves accordingly. Every single decision they make whether it is speaking with a nation’s leader or authorizing a clandestine mission to retrieve a powerful artifact is strategic. Gandalf and Dumbledore are prime examples of this since they’re playing the long game, knowing that it is just a matter of time before Sauron and Voldemort returns, and they work overtime to maximize their moves while minimizing that of their enemies.
When it comes to the role wizards play in the world, they are generally counted as the most powerful, owing to their spell-making abilities. In this vein, they are instrumental players in the eternal conflict between good and evil. The side they choose determines the powers they wield and whether they help or hurt people.
In many worlds, fantasy wizards take prominent roles, typically serving as the villain, the person attempting to dominate them, or as either the protagonist themselves or stalwart allies of the hero. Regardless if they’re good or bad, the decisions they make or don’t make will determine the fate of the world.
Due to them holding influential positions in the world, wizards are seen as leaders, even if they are independent agents. The everyday folk look to them for guidance and counsel and even the mightiest king seeks out their wisdom. They provide them with sage advice — even if they don’t want to hear it — as well as advise them on how to proceed if they are full of doubt.
All fantasy wizards have their own agenda. Some consider themselves mere servants of a higher power whereas others are more ambitious, seeking greater glory for themselves. The former works to implement their superior’s will like Gandalf the White, a stark contrast to the latter where they want the power to rule over all. They all use their own skills to their advantage in order to advance their agenda at the expense of that of their enemies.
Wizards come with all types of powers that they use to devastating effect. For instance, fire wizards can rain fire upon the battlefield whereas their malevolent counterparts use black magic to instantly pulverize their enemies. Their powers enable them to dramatically shift the tide of a battle in one direction or another. The destruction they generate on the battlefield can have some lasting effects that persist for a long time.
Fantasy wizards are an integral component of worldbuilding. Besides their awesome proficiency in spells, they take leadership roles, usually serving as major characters in the stories they’re in. They have the uncanny knack of knowing exactly what words to say when dispensing advice to their friends.
Wizards are just part of a larger magical community. There’s also sorcerers, animals capable of magic, and necromancers. There’s no shortage to the amazing possibilities of creating magical beings!
The lifestyles of fantasy wizards differ from world to world. In some, they are center stage at the grand drama in the story, working to rally people to defeat a rising evil. In others, they live far away from people, living in towers where they observe the movements of stars for signs of the growing darkness.
In the world, wizards are major players. In leadership positions, they work to implement their own agenda since they play a crucial role in the external war between good and evil. As such, the decisions they make can have profound effects on the world, for good or ill.
A fictional world just wouldn’t feel right without fantasy wizards which is why you ought to bring this social class into the one you’re building from the ground up!
