Overview

Just as in the real world, there are all kinds of people in a fantasy world. Some are avid dreamers, free spirits, ruthless, and so on and they shape the careers they pursue. When it comes to the fantasy businessman, he consistently strives to make deals that benefit himself and the company he works for as well as his partners in his deals.

The thing of it is, the career of the businessman is well suited for those who have certain personality traits. For instance, socialization is an integral component of this profession, meaning those who dislike interacting with people would be better to look elsewhere. Those at the top are never content with the status quo; they are always searching for another chance to land bigger and better deals.

The fantasy businessman approaches deals based on who he is at heart. Those with a ruthless nature seek to maximize their profit at the expense of their partner as opposed to those of an altruistic nature who believes that a deal is good for all parties involved instead of just one. This makes for riveting storytelling in that unscrupulous businessmen will do all kinds of dirty tricks to get as good of a deal as they can get.

Regarding his role in the world, the businessman helps companies and industries reach new heights in terms of size and the products they develop and sell. This in turn leads to more jobs for the communities they’re located in. The more people working, the more money that is spent in them, helping to strengthen the economy not for the communities but for the country.

This is the eighth article in the series exploring the different kinds of fantasy characters. If you want more, you can check our our blog page!

The Best Personality Traits for a Fantasy Businessman

Whenever people think of a businessman, they think of someone with a scheming nature, always searching for ways to enrich himself and undercut his rivals. While that might be true for some, the vast majority of businessmen are anything but. In fact, many have a burning desire to do the right thing not just for the firms they work for but for the other parties.

When fleshing out the fantasy businessman, there are several crucial personality traits to take into consideration. There are a whole bevy of traits you can choose from and you can go with the ones that are suited to the character you’re developing.

A bunch of flying red question marks in light gray clouds with wings. The question marks are flying high up in the skies as seen with the blue sky and white clouds. They represent the various types of fantasy occupations.

A popular one is the one from the previous paragraph regarding the scheming nature. With this one, he is always up to no good which gives you many sterling storytelling opportunities. His ruthlessness is manifested in his capacity to do shady things such as blackmailing someone, threatening someone, forcing someone to take a bad deal, or taking illegal actions to enrich his company without attracting the government’s attention.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is the benevolent or altruistic nature. Here, the businessman wants all parties involved to be happy with the deal and won’t stop until an agreement that satisfies both sides is reached. He wants the best for all parties and he is honest in his deal-making process, not wanting to do anything that could cause irreparable harm to the relationship.

One common trait all businessmen possess is that of ambition. The drive to succeed pushes them forward as they endeavor to reach new heights where they can make bolder goals and objectives that steer them to even grander heights. They never rest on their laurels though as there’s always a bigger prize waiting for them to get.

How the Fantasy Businessman Approaches Deals

The typical businessman hungers to make a deal and he uses his expertise to make deals that ultimately benefit him and the company he works for. Most of the time, the deal is beneficial for both sides but every now and then, there are some that are dramatically slanted towards one side or another. The deals he goes after is largely dictated by who he is at his core.

A good fantasy businessman approaches deals from the perspective of doing something that is good for all parties involved. He puts together a package he believes will appeal to the person he is targeting and makes a genuine pitch, using the power of persuasion to try to sway him into joining him. If the potential partner turns him down, the businessman thanks him for his next and moves onto the next one. This process repeats until he finds someone who’s willing to go on on it with him.

This brown room is where a fantasy royal council meets. The wall is a light brown and the floor a darker brown. A large white table with gray striations is in the center, going all the way down to the bottom. On each side are gray chairs. Above the chair at the end is a blue window with light shining through. Gray columns support the ceiling.

Whenever he makes his pitch, he does so strategically, depending on the circumstances. In some places, he’ll go to the office of his potential partner or he’ll ask to meet in neutral territory. He attempts to make the immediate surroundings as friendly as possible so that the other party is more receptive to what he has to say. As he speaks, he appeals to his good business sense, showcasing how the deal will be good for him and what it can do for him.

Not every fantasy businessman has a good motive when it comes to dealmaking. Those with a ruthless reputation seek to use everything they have at their disposal to maximize their profit at the expense of their partners. They do so for chiefly two reasons: money and power. They believe that the more of each they have, the more influence they wield and they use it to bully or cajole people into doing what they want.

There are a number of ways this particular type of businessman goes about making a deal. One such is he can get his hands on incriminating information and use said info as leverage to force someone to take a bad deal. Other options include bribing someone to get info before his competitors do so that he can make a great deal quickly and threatening to use the full power of his company to force someone to sign a deal that isn’t beneficial to him. These actions are of course illegal and the smart ones go to great lengths to cover their tracks and use plausible deniability when it suits them.

The Fantasy Businessman and the World

Most people don’t realize it but the businessman is a valuable addition to an imaginary world. Through his making deals with various people, he plants new ideas and they grow up to be companies that ultimately serve the communities they’re located in. These companies wind up becoming important in the local economy.

Technological revolutions and breakthroughs don’t just appear organic. They are the culmination of years of effort, all of which originated when the fantasy businessman approached someone with an idea. These profound changes affect the towns and cities and countries they’re in, changing them in both good and bad ways.

This orange-colored bait shop named "Portside Bait Shop" is a popular spot for a fantasy fisherman. It has round windows, a red roof, and a brown door. A golden path runs from the door to the bottom through a grassy plain in autumn. It sits next to the ocean and above it is a pink sky with white clouds.

Some businessmen boldly go into new directions where their ideas, when they come to fruition, give rise to entirely new companies and industries that didn’t exist previously. These new places upend the economic landscape by introducing products that make things easier for everyone to do, leading to an increase in productivity and happiness.

The more deals a fantasy businessman makes, the more job opportunities spring up for people, especially those who work in the companies he himself helped found. The more people working, the more money they can spend in their local communities, boosting local businesses, and so on. This leads to cities, towns, and entire countries enjoying a period of prosperity and happy times.

Some deals a businessman makes for the company he works for spearheads the development of new product lines or services, helping the firm bring in more customers which in turn leads to more money coming in. These new revenue streams enable the firm to conduct and continue research into how to attract even more customers so that they can keep diversifying what they have to offer.

Tying it all Together

In short, the fantasy businessman plays a role when it comes to worldbuilding. Through his efforts, he helps shape the world the story is set in. Everything the protagonist does, from sleeping in his bed in his own home to eating food he bought at the local store, are the result of a deal the businessman made with someone before the beginning of the plot.

Not everyone is cut out to be a businessman. Only those who possess the right traits can go far in this profession. Traits such as ambition and ruthlessness are invaluable, helping people to pursue their dreams with zeal and in some cases, going a tad overboard to the point where they run roughshod over some people.

How the fantasy businessman approaches deals stems from who he is at heart. For example, those with a ruthless nature are likely to resort to underhanded tactics to get what they want, even if it affects preexisting relationships. This is one reason why this character is rich in terms of storytelling potential.

On the world stage, the businessman is a mover-and-shaker. The deals he makes throughout his career shapes the community he calls home where new businesses are established and new ideas come to life. They help generate new jobs and money for residents, helping to make the places they live in better.

Some stories feature a businessman as a key character, others relegate him to a minor role. Whether he’s a major or minor character in yours, there’s no denying how impactful he can be for the world the plot takes place in!
