The Premise

A decent number of creatures that appear in fantasy worlds are based on folklore or stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. One such creature is that of the leprechaun and is considered one of the genre’s most fascinating since it does things that no other does. To date, it is one of the oldest in the genre, having originated from Ireland and has made its way into many stories across the decades.

The leprechaun that shows up in various stories gets its inspiration from the mythical creature that’s appeared in children’s fables. This creature’s appearance has remained fairly consistent in all of the tales it’s been in, right down to its height. Interestingly enough, it sports green clothes in a great deal of the worlds it’s a part of.

While the leprechaun might be known for its diminutive size, it is also a master of mischief and trickery. It enjoys deceiving others in a playful way with little intention of actually causing harm though there are some members who especially delight in wreaking havoc in a vindictive manner. These nasty leprechauns are to be avoided at all costs since they revel in other people’s pain.

In terms of the world, this green-clothed creature is particular about where to call home. With a wealth of knowledge of trickery, it prefers areas where it can safely hide and come out to cause some trouble, not those that are wide open with little to no spots to evade detection. Travelers who enter such areas would be wise to keep their guard up, especially at nighttime when leprechauns are around, lest they wake up to see their supplies gone.

The Interesting Appearance of the Leprechaun

When it comes to its physical appearance, the leprechaun’s been remarkably consistent whether it shows up in a medieval world or one far into the future. In fact, its appearance originates from the stories people heard about it growing up or reading about in children’s fables. It is instantly recognizable when it first shows up in the story for a number of reasons.

The first reason why people know they’re seeing a leprechaun is due to its small size. It is roughly the same height as an imp, or barely just taller than the average human toddler or child. Why, if someone isn’t paying close attention, he could mistake it for a little human and woe betide him if he calls it a child.

Though it strongly resembles a human, the average leprechaun has red hair and rather thick eyebrows which is a carryover from the Irish culture from which it originates. However, there are those that sport white hair, blond hair, and so on which helps add some variety to this mischievous imp. People can expect to see all kinds of eye colors, from blue to green despite the fact that these two colors are the ones that come to mind whenever they think of a leprechaun.

One thing that separates this silly creature from everyday people is that it is fond of wearing green. It’ll have a top hat, cloak, white leggings, and boots all of which are green. Even those that live in houses will have them decorated in green, from the walls right down to the furniture!

Due to its nature, it has a bouncy or perky walk, as if it is looking forward to its next target. It walks jauntily from one place to another as it keeps an eye out for anything it can get its hands on and have a little fun with though it’ll put everything back as it was when it’s done or if it’s caused someone genuine pain.

The Remarkable Powers the Leprechaun Wields

Its diminutive size doesn’t mean the leprechaun doesn’t have any powers. Only a fool would think otherwise since this creature doesn’t just have a pedigree in mischief, it sports an impressive array of powers that can take anyone by surprise. When dealing with one, it is prudent to know what to expect so that there’s no way it can catch you off guard.

The leprechaun sports a gleeful grin as it eagerly rubs its hands together, as if it cannot wait to cause mischief or pull a prank. This is its true power, the one it makes extensive use of. This imp can make objects vanish with a flick of its fingers, switch items to make someone eat something he shouldn’t eat, or temporarily take control of an object to cause havoc, all in the name of fun and trickery.

Another power the leprechaun has is its ability to tell a lie with a straight face. For instance, when asked for directions on how to reach a place, it will deliberately lead the questioner astray, pointing him in the opposite direction. By the time the person’s realized what happened, the imp’s long gone, cackling with glee at fooling someone.

Vanishing at will is the third power the leprechaun has and it uses it more than you think it does. When it feels threatened or senses trouble heading its way, it’ll disappear before you know it and wind up in a safe place. It uses this power when a group of people are attempting to drive it out of town and it’ll simply pop up in another town where it‘ll enthusiastically continue its antics, earning the ire of even more people.

Areas the Leprechaun Calls Home

This forest in summertime is studied by a fantasy researcher. The forest has green-yellow grass, trees, and a green-yellow canopy of leaves. Green-yellow spheres float in the air. The fantasy botanist loves working in places like this one.

His jester nature masks a creature who is surprisingly selective about where he calls home. Unlike many other denizens of the fantasy genre, the leprechaun picks an area that he feels is a good place for him to dwell and he will stick to it until he is either run out or he’s ousted. Thus, it can be difficult to pinpoint such a place since it varies from world to world.

One place you’re likely to come across a leprechaun is the forest. It’s the perfect spot since it’s essentially green, giving him ample places to hide out in. His green clothes blend in with the scenery, making it difficult for someone to see him and he uses it to evade pursuers or angry townsfolk out for revenge.

The leprechaun is fond of sites that have plenty hiding areas, not those that are wide open like the plains or those with extreme temperatures such as the desert or the tundra. A place he might take as his residence is a lush tropical island since it is isolated from the world and seldom receives visitors. While its remoteness might seem like an advantage, it won’t be one for long because the imp will get bored and want to move on.

A good area the leprechaun can be found is the jungle. While it might not be pleased with the humidity and heat, it’ll overlook it due to the myriad flora and fauna many of which offer great hiding spots should it find itself in trouble and need some time to catch its breath. When enraged, this creature will use the jungle to confound its foe and throw out all kinds of nasty tricks to force it to withdraw.

This might come as a surprise but the cliff is another place that the leprechaun can call home. It might not seem obvious at first glance but if you think about it, the cliff works quite well for the leprechaun’s residence. Its diminutive size enables it to quickly climb down the cliff and make itself home in one of its small alcoves, making it quite difficult for monsters or disgruntled townsfolk to grab it. It can enjoy the sunrise and sunset from the alcove, without fear of being captured.

The leprechaun is a mischievous creature who delights in causing trouble though he does so jocularly, not maliciously. It makes life interesting, even if people don’t particularly enjoy his antics though it has to tread a fine line, lest a trick it plays angers them to the point where they move to drive it out. If you’re looking to bring a troublemaker creature, one with a good heart, you can’t go wrong with the leprechaun!
